Are genuine parts really worth the price?

We’re all keen to make our money go further, so when your grounds equipment needs a service or maintenance, it might be tempting to look at non-branded parts to save a few pounds.

Non-branded or aftermarket parts, while often cheaper, may lack the same level of quality control, potentially leading to premature wear, reduced performance, or even damage to the equipment they’ve been fitted to.

For commercial grounds equipment, genuine manufacturer parts (also known as OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer parts) offer the best assurance of quality, performance, and warranty coverage, but may come at a higher price.

The real deal?

Genuine manufacturer parts have guaranteed compatibility and performance. They are designed and manufactured to the exact specifications of the original equipment, ensuring optimal fit and function. They are also typically covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, providing peace of mind and protection against defects. The parts undergo rigorous testing and quality control procedures, ensuring high standards of performance and durability; and are fully compliant with regulations, meeting specific industry standards and regulations, particularly for emission-critical components.
However, they are generally more expensive than aftermarket non-branded parts.

Or something cheaper?

Non-branded parts are a lower cost. But they may not meet the same quality standards as OEM parts, leading to potential performance issues or premature failure. They are probably not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty or may void certain aspects of the warranty. Inferior parts can cause damage to other components of the equipment or compromise safety; and if that happens, there’s no guarantee that the part will perform as intended or meet the required standards.

Risk Tolerance

Consider the potential consequences of using a non-OEM part, including potential damage, downtime, and warranty implications.

While aftermarket parts can be a cost-effective solution, it’s essential to weigh the potential risks and benefits carefully. When in doubt, consulting with a qualified technician or the equipment manufacturer can help you make the best decision for your specific needs. Perhaps the best choice depends on your personal and company risk tolerance? Because the lack of guarantees with cheaper parts could introduce a risk that your company – and perhaps your stress levels – could well do without.

Just think, could your business run if your equipment lost its warranty or broke down completely?
